Athlone is a town in the centre of Ireland on the banks of the River Shannon. This 108,390 sq.m. development is the single biggest urban regeneration project of its kind undertaken in Ireland and incorporates shops, residential units; restaurants; an 11 storey, 167-bed 4-star hotel; a covered street and square; a crèche and 1,140 car parking spaces on a 2.9 ha site adjacent to the town’s historical quarter. A triple basement was excavated up to 15 m below ground level and the ground water required lowering by up 7 m. The ground conditions comprised coarse gravels and abstraction flow rates from the 20 No dewatering wells were up to 450 l/sec for a period of 18 months. Some of the wells were incorporated into the M&E system and utilised as open loop geothermal wells.
