The 2.5 km DLR extension from King George V Station to Woolwich Arsenal included 1.8 km long, twin bore 6 m diameter tunnels under the River Thames, as well as associated tunnel approach structures. The northern approach structure was 190 m long, 10–20 m wide and up to 15 m deep. Prior to work commencing WJ carried out extensive computer modelling work investigating the abstraction requirements, and the drawdown created. As part of this work a recharge scheme was designed to control external drawdown in order to mitigate the risk of adverse settlement impact on sensitive neighbouring structures. WJ installed 26 internal deepwells screened in the chalk aquifer, and 32 recharge wells screened in the River Terrace Gravels.
