The £600 million Lee Tunnel forms part of the London Tideway Project and is to be constructed to prevent 16 million tonnes a year of sewage mixed with rainwater overflowing into the River Lee. The 7m diameter tunnel will be used to store, and transfer the sewage 7 km from the overflow point at Abbey Mills Pumping Station to the Beckton Treatment Works. As part of the works three large diameter deep shafts are to be constructed. To investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the Chalk aquifer and the feasibility of groundwater lowering to assist the shaft construction WJ installed a number of wells up to 135 m deep and carried out fully instrumented and monitored pumping tests in each.
