The new Police and Fire Station building included a basement of plan size 72 m by 78 m with a dig depth of 4.5 m and side support by secant piles. Ground conditions comprised layers of sand and clay overlying Sandstone with standing groundwater level within 1 m of ground level. WJ carried out a pumping test and used the data collected to develop a scheme comprising fifteen 12 m deep wells to provide pressure relief in the sandstone. In addition a perimeter wellpoint system was used to drain the upper sand layer. Discharge flows peaked at 75 l/s. WJ used an automated data logger monitoring system, which provided a call-out alarm and near real time access to flow and drawdown data via WJ’s monitoring web site.
