The main works comprised the construction of a large mansion to a very high standard. There was a 33 m x 26 m, 7.0 m deep excavation for the basement swimming pool and plant rooms. The ground conditions comprised silty sands and clays with a standing ground water level of just 1.5 m below ground level. A perimeter wellpoint system was installed prior to excavation and this enabled the excavation to take place completely ‘in the dry’ with steeply battered sides and without any requirement for additional side support. The layered ground conditions meant that installation of the wellpoints using the conventional placing tube method would have been unreliable and therefore a drilling rig was utilized. The wellpoints were installed in just two days.
