An open-loop geothermal heat exchange system was specified to provide both heating and cooling capability for a large office and studio development. The system comprised three abstraction wells and three recharge wells drilled to a depth of 135 m into the chalk aquifer with a finished diameter of 300 mm. WJ was contracted to carry out a programme of well development by acidisation and airlift pumping in order to increase well yields. Following this, WJ completed an extensive programme of step tests, constant rate tests and individual and combined recharge tests to prove the system could be operated at a total flow rate of 55 l/s. WJ installed and commissioned the permanent borehole pumps, recharge assemblies and well headworks for this system.
