The proposed by-pass works involved the construction of a concrete U-shaped trough and a series of bridge abutments which were slid into position under an existing railway embankment. These works required excavation over an area of 315 m by 40 to 50 m to a depth of 6 m. Ground conditions comprised Alluvium and Floodplain Gravels overlying Sandstone with standing groundwater level within 3m of ground level. WJ carried out a pumping test and used the results to develop a well dewatering scheme comprising eighteen 18 m deep wells. Discharge flows peaked at 180 l/s and the system was maintained in operation for 18 months. WJ used an automated data logger monitoring system, which provided a call-out alarm and near real time access to flow and drawdown data via WJ’s monitoring web site.
