This major shopping centre development involved excavation over an area of 280 m by 105 m to a depth of up to 9 m. Side support was by sheet piles. Ground conditions comprised Fluvial Glacial Deposits overlying Mudstone with a standing groundwater level within 5 m of ground level. WJ carried out a pumping test and used the data collected to develop a scheme comprising thirty 16 m deep wells plus a series of shallow wellpoint cross lines in the Fluvial Glacial Deposits. Discharge flows peaked at 90 l/s and the system was maintained in operation for 2 years. WJ used an automated data logger monitoring system, which provided a call-out alarm and near real time access to flow and drawdown data via WJ’s monitoring web site.
