Problems of leakage, ground loss and settlement in a section of the 100-year-old Victorian tunnels of the Glasgow underground railway near Govan Station were solved by a unique groundwater control system. The system links four interconnected 4 m diameter, 14 m deep shafts to a series of horizontal wells installed by drilling from within the shafts. WJ designed the scheme and installed the permanent instrumentation to monitor drawdown and tunnel movement. WJ also carried out the temporary dewatering required to facilitate construction of the shafts and drains using an array of 20 deepwells. The Govan Dewatering Project Team was awarded the British Geotechnical Society Fleming Award and the project also received a commendation from the Saltire Society of Scotland.
